Omni-SLR

SLR is a technique for precisely measuring the distance to a satellite from the round-trip travel time of laser light.
Omni-SLR is a new compact, low-cost and multi-purpose satellite laser ranging system.
By establishing more observing stations, we aim to expand the international network for space geodesy.
Test observations are underway at Ishioka Geodetic Observing Station, and we plan to attempt the first SLR observations in Antarctica at Syowa Station.

The project

Compact by design.
Global in purpose.

The Omni-SLR project explores how small, affordable and transportable satellite laser ranging systems can complement the global network. By reducing the cost, size and infrastructure required for operation, the project aims to make it practical to establish observing sites in more regions of the world.

A denser and more geographically balanced network would strengthen satellite orbit determination, terrestrial reference frames and long-term monitoring of the changing Earth. Omni-SLR is also being developed as a flexible platform for applications beyond conventional geodesy.

Two Omni-SLR stations are recognized within the International Laser Ranging Service network as Engineering Stations: Ishioka (ISHL, monument number 7317) and Syowa (SYOL, monument number 7340).

石岡局はISHL(局番号7317)、昭和局はSYOL(局番号7340)です。

The team

Built through collaboration.

Led by the Geoscience Laboratory at Hitotsubashi University, the core team brings together four research groups in geodesy, astronomy, ocean engineering and polar science. Joint research is also pursued with the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan and JAXA, as well as industry partners including SoftBank Corp. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The project is supported by GGOS Japan.
